What do I do if I want an SSL certificate for my site?

You will need:
  • Notepad
  • A web browser other than Internet Explorer
  • Your cPanel details
Expected time to order the Certificate: 10-20 minutes
Installation time: 2 Days maximum

Step 1: Generating the Private Key

Generating the Private Key you will need to log into cPanel (http://<yourdomain>/cpanel) and click on the "ssl manager". From here please select the "private key" option. You will now be presented with an area to paste an existing ssl certificate and below that an area to generate a new one. Please use the form at the bottom to generate a new certificate.

For the ' domain name' please place the domain name that you wish to protect (e.g. www<yourdomain> or <yourdomain> as these are separate) then click "generate".

Once you have done this you will be presented with a jumble of numbers and text bordered by "-"'s. Copy the lines with the "-"'s including everything between them into notepad and save the file in a location so that you can open it at a later date.
!!!!Do not lose this file!!!!

Step 2: Generating the CSR

Go back to the main cPanel page again and select "ssl manager". This time select the "CSR/Certificate signing request page". Select the certificate from the drop down list and fill in the details as best as possible. Country should contain 2 letters (e.g. AU for Australia) and select a password (this is for verification only and as such it does not matter if you lose this password).

You will once again be presented with some random data with lines containing "-" in them. Copy these lines and everything in between into the same file as the private key and paste it below the private key so that you have the 2 of them in the one location.
You are now ready to order the certificate!

Step 3: Ordering the Certificate

Please visit http://www.webcity.com.au/ssl and select the certificate that best matches your needs. For first time users we recommend the rapid ssl. The premium ssl will also work with mobile phones while the top end premium certificate include a site seal from geotrust to indicate that you have an ssl certificate installed.

After selecting which one to use it will take you to an order form and request the CSR (certificate signing request). Please copy this into the required field and ensure that the domain field in the order matches the one you entered when you generated the private key and that the CSR field has no blank lines or spaces.

You will be asked to specify an approval email address. Please ensure that this is an active email address that you have access to. If it does not exist we would recommend logging into cPanel and setting up a forwarding for ssladmin@<yourdomain> to be redirected to an email account which you use.

For the 'webserver' field please select "CPANEL". You will also be asked for another email address to deliver the ssl certificate to. We would recommend using the same email address you selected above.
Once this is done you will receive a welcome email and receipt in 2 different emails as well as an additional approval email form geotrust. If you do not receive this within 30 minutes please give us a call on 1300 65 55 90. Once this is complete you will then be emailed the complete certificate a couple of minutes later.

Step 4:  Ordering the Install

Please visit the ssl ordering page once you have received the certificate and click the "get installation" link, This form will be similar to the ssl order form but requires the emailed certificate from geotrust and the private key from the file which you saved earlier. Once this is complete we will manually install this in the next 48 hours and verify that it works.
