What is a Top Level Domain (TLD)?

A Top Level Domain (TLD) is the right-most part of a domain name.

For example, with the domain globalwebstores.com, .com is the top level domain. TLD's come in two flavours:

  • Global Top Level Domains ( gTLD - by far the most popular)
  • Country code Top Level Domains (ccTLD).

gTLD examples include .com .net .org .mi .edu and .gov

Only .com .net .biz .info and .org are available to the general public.

Country code examples include .au (Australia), .tv (Tuvalu).
