Why can I only renew for one year when I transfer?

At the time of a transfer, any gTLD domain can only be renewed for 1 year. This is the global gTLD policy. However, after the transfer has completed you can renew your domain for up to 9 years. The maximum registration period of a gTLD domain name is 10 years.
